Why matching is harder than it sounds
You might think matching a car’s colour is simply a case of looking up the paint code — and that’s the starting point. But paint changes over time. Sun, weathering and age gradually shift a car’s colour, so the shade on the car today often differs from the original factory code. Matching to the car as it is now, not just the code, is what separates a good result from an obvious repair.
How paint matching is done
Good paint matching combines the paint code with careful assessment of the actual colour on the car, often using colour-matching tools and, crucially, a skilled eye. The painter mixes and tests the colour, adjusting until it matches the surrounding panels under proper lighting. Metallic and pearlescent finishes add further complexity, as the way they reflect light has to match too, not just the base colour.
Blending for an invisible repair
For many repairs, the paint is “blended” into the surrounding panels rather than stopping at a hard edge, so the transition is undetectable. This is a skilled technique that makes the difference between a repair you can spot and one you genuinely can’t. It’s as much art as science.

On a classic, original colours, older paint types and decades of ageing all make matching more demanding. Achieving a finish that looks right on a period car — and does it justice — takes experience with these older colours and finishes, not just modern paint.
