What the MOT is
The MOT is an annual test that checks your car meets the minimum legal standards for roadworthiness and safety. Cars over three years old must have a valid MOT to be driven on the road. It is not a check of mechanical condition or reliability — it will not tell you the clutch is on its way out — but a pass/fail on specific safety and environmental items.
What gets tested
The test covers the things that make a car safe and legal on the road: brakes, tyres and wheels, steering and suspension, lights and indicators, the exhaust and emissions, seatbelts, the windscreen and wipers, the horn, and the general structure and bodywork for corrosion in critical areas. The tester works through a defined list, and items are marked as pass, advisory, minor, major or dangerous.
The common fails
Most MOT failures come down to a handful of things, and the striking part is how many are simple and preventable. Lighting faults — a blown bulb — are one of the most common failures of all, and one of the easiest to avoid. Tyres below the legal tread depth or damaged. Brakes worn or unbalanced. Worn suspension and steering components. Windscreen wipers and washers that do not clear the screen properly. Emissions outside limits. Many cars fail on things the owner could have spotted and sorted in five minutes.
Giving yourself the best chance
A few checks before the test save the frustration of a fail. Walk round the car and check every light works. Check the tyres for tread and damage. Top up the screen wash and check the wipers clear cleanly. Listen for anything obviously wrong. Better still, a service before the MOT catches the wear items that cause failures, so the two together give you the best chance of a clean pass.
