A full classic car restoration is a big undertaking, and one of the most common reasons people hesitate is simply not knowing what they’re signing up for. So here’s an honest walk-through of how we approach a restoration, and what each stage really involves.
1. Assessment and planning. Before anything is touched, we go over the car properly — bodywork, chassis, mechanicals, interior — to understand its true condition. Classic cars are full of surprises, and a thorough assessment up front means fewer nasty ones later. This is also where we agree the scope: a full nut-and-bolt restoration is a different job from a sympathetic recommission, and the right answer depends on the car and what you want from it.
2. Strip-down. The car is carefully dismantled and every part catalogued. With older vehicles this stage often reveals the real story — hidden corrosion, past repairs, the difference between what looks solid and what actually is.
3. Bodywork and corrosion. This is the heart of most restorations. Rust is cut out, panels are repaired or fabricated, and the structure is brought back to sound condition. On a classic, this is skilled, time-consuming work — and it’s the part that separates a proper restoration from a cosmetic tidy-up.
4. Paint and finish. Once the body is right, it’s prepared and painted to the standard the car deserves, whether that’s a faithful original colour or something to your specification. Good paint is as much about the preparation underneath as the finish on top.
5. Mechanical work. Engine, gearbox, brakes, suspension and electrics are overhauled or rebuilt as needed, so the car doesn’t just look the part but drives safely and reliably.
6. Reassembly and detailing. Everything comes back together, trim and interior are refitted or retrimmed, and the car is detailed and road-tested.
