Buying a classic car is one of motoring’s great pleasures, and one of its great traps. A car that looks stunning in photographs can hide rot, bodged repairs and a history that will cost you a fortune to put right. Knowing what to check — and when to walk away — is the difference between a dream and a money pit.
Bodywork and rust: the big one
Rust is what kills classics, and it hides. Shiny paint means nothing on its own. Check the areas that rot first: sills, wheel arches, floor pans, the bottoms of doors, and around the windscreen and boot. Press gently — sound metal is firm, rot flexes or crackles. Filler is a red flag: a magnet held to the panel will not stick where filler has been used to hide corrosion. Look underneath, not just at the shiny top surfaces, because the structure hides below.
Signs of a previous respray or bodge
Overspray on rubber seals and trim, mismatched paint shades between panels, and ripples in the bodywork all suggest previous accident repair — not necessarily fatal, but you want to know. A car that has been resprayed to sell may be hiding what is underneath.
Mechanicals
Start it from cold if you can — a car that only starts warm may be masking a problem. Listen for knocks, watch the exhaust for smoke (blue means oil, white can mean head gasket), and check for leaks underneath. On the test drive, feel for a slipping clutch, crunching gears and brakes that pull. Classics are simpler than modern cars, but tired mechanicals still add up fast.
Paperwork and history
For a classic, history is gold. A thick folder of receipts, old MOTs and records tells you the car has been cared for and lets you trace what has been done. Matching numbers — engine and chassis matching the documentation — matter for value on many classics. Gaps in the history are not always fatal, but they are unknowns you are paying for.
Get it inspected
The single best money you can spend is on a professional inspection before you buy. Someone who knows classics will spot the rot, the bodges and the mechanical trouble that an enthusiastic buyer, seeing what they want to see, will miss. On a car costing thousands, an inspection that saves you from a bad one pays for itself many times over.
